Mission Statement

"Fighting for your Life"

The turn of the last century witnessed a veritable explosion of information in the field of cancer research, which has greatly enhanced our understanding of why normal cells become malignant. A critical paradigm shift has been the realization that every cancer, like the individual it arises in, is unique.

In other words, we are moving from an era of generalizations into specific "profiling" of individual cancers, and tailoring therapy appropriately. The successful application of expression arrays and proteomics to the study of cancers has remarkably expanded the armamentarium of abnormal markers (i.e., cellular proteins) that distinguish neoplastic cells from their benign counterparts. It is becoming increasingly evident that aberrant expression of proteins in cancer cells is not merely an epiphenomenona of malignancy, but plays an active part in the genesis and progression of tumors. Incorporation of expression data into risk stratification of cancers has repeatedly proved to be a powerful tool, and most recommended tumor prognostic panels now include some form of protein expression data as a routine component.

The mission of the Veripath OncoDiagnostics is to provide the clinician with a "protein expression profile" of every cancer that will result in the most appropriate therapy for the individual patient. To this end, the laboratory continues to keep pace with the field of cancer proteomics, expanding our compendium of available markers for tumor profiling on an ongoing basis. Through continuious discussion with our surgeons and oncologists we formulate rational expression panels for individual patients or cancers by merging state of the art technology with cost effective use of resources. We strongly believe that the availability of the cancer-specific information will be an invaluable resource for diagnosticians, medical and surgical oncologists alike.
